Good Solid Lent

Go into the desert.

Lent is a time to grow closer to God: to leave behind practices that distract us from God and take up practices that bring us closer to Him.

Core Elements:

  • Target. Selecting a bad habit or a vice to target and conclusively defeat (e.g. screen time/social media, gluttony, overwork, idleness, excessive computer gaming, excessive drinking, etc).

  • Depth. Committing to a routine of daily prayer, spiritual reading, and ascetic practice, supported by sacramentals and the Sacraments.

  • Support. Gaining support, solidarity, and accountability through sharing our successes and failures with others engaged in this same work.

  • Lent. We will just do a good, solid Lent, based on the Church’s guidance, with a few robust practices to go deeper into the life of grace.

  • CONSIDERATIONS. It is important to note that if you commit to GSL, this is a private commitment that you have made yourself and is not an Obligation as required by the Church. Therefore, whilst it is important that you stick with the commitment for the sake of your spiritual growth, you are not bound by the rules of obedience. For example, if your child has a birthday during Lent, it is good to have a slice of cake and celebrate with them. Spiritual ‘pride’ is dangerous. If you are on exercise, driving duty, etc, then you have a higher duty to remain sufficiently fed to carry out your duties well and safely.
